Whether you select an upper or lower night guard is a matter of personal preference; either choice will provide an effective barrier between teeth, and only one night guard is really needed. We sell about 2/3 uppers to 1/3 lowers, so it seems that there is a customer preference for uppers. If your teeth are more worn down on either upper or lower, you will get a clearer and more accurate impression from the teeth that aren't as worn. Thus, you may wish to select a night guard for the teeth in better condition.
